He is a US citizen, as is his mother. He was born in Miami and lived as a child in New York and Nicaragua until he was 12 years old, where he attended La Salle Pedagogical College and completed his secondary studies at boarding schools in Newton Massachusetts and Kent Connecticut. In , he graduated from Harvard Business School. Shortly after the triumph of the revolution, he moved to France and later established his residence between the United States and Guatemala.
